Along the rugged Sonoma coastline, the Hatchway Home is situated on one of the most northern meadows of The Sea Ranch, California. Nestled up against a mature cypress hedgerow, the design of the home optimizes the lush forest and majestic ocean views. The courtyard, sheltered from the prevailing winds, is the heart of the home amongst which three distinct building volumes are arranged that are linked by a transparent hallway.
A seamless indoor-outdoor atmosphere is created between the rooms, patios, decks, and meadow supported by a total of eleven oversized sliding glass doors. The sunset deck is connected to the living room that continues into an open European kitchen organized around a large cooking island. In the second building volume, that is elevated a couple of steps, the master suite can be found. It peeks around the corner of the living room to create stunning views over the Pacific Ocean directly from a king-size bed or stand-alone bathtub. The third volume houses two office spaces that easily transform into guest rooms by bringing down the wall beds from custom cabinetry. In between these rooms is a guest bathroom located that transitions through the shower into a private outdoor lounge patio.
Almost all openings in the exterior walls of the home are 8 feet tall and sit directly on the concrete floors creating a continues datum line around the perimeter of the home. This line is also where the aluminum roof and siding transition into exterior walls cladded with Monterey pine boards that are thermally modified to withstand the coastal climate. The same boards are also brought back into the home unifying the overall design.
